What we measure on Google AI Overviews
- Answer Share for the Google AI Overviews surface, on the same sampling family as every other engine.
- Whether your domain appears as a cited source in the AI Overview, checked through the AI Overviews tracker against Google's live SERP.
- Citation Rate and Owned Citation Share for AI Overview citations across the sampled window.
- Average citation position where the Overview exposes one, and ghost citations where a source is used without naming your brand.
How we sample it
The AI Overviews tracker queries Google's SERP through a paid vendor, one credit per keyword, on a user action and hard capped at the call site. Results carry the same treatment as every engine: a 95% Wilson interval, the disclosed sample size, and a provisional label below three samples. A failed pull writes no number rather than a filled-in one.
What we do not measure here
Stating the limit is the point. A number is only trustworthy next to the boundary of what it does not cover.
- Referral traffic from AI Overviews. Most AI Overview click-throughs pass no referrer, so we cannot and do not report them as AI Overviews sessions. We measure citation, not clicks.
- Gemini the assistant. Google-Extended feeds Gemini and AI Overviews training, but our citation measurement here is scoped to the AI Overview surface we actually sample.
- Positions on a SERP layout that shifted between pulls. When the tracked keyword set changes, the run is marked not comparable rather than shown as movement.
