How Google AI Overviews decides who gets cited
- Google AI Overviews sit on top of ordinary Google indexing: the summary at the top of results is generated from pages Google already crawls, and it links its sources.
- There is no separate crawler to allow for AI Overviews; if Googlebot can read and rank you, you are eligible. That also means classic technical SEO failures take you out of AI answers too.
- Google-Extended, the token many sites block, governs training for Gemini models, not whether AI Overviews can summarize your pages. The audit reports what your robots.txt actually says, per token.
What we measure on Google AI Overviews
We run real queries, capture the AI Overview when one appears, store it, and record which domains it links. Because an Overview does not appear on every query, our numbers state how many sampled queries produced one at all.

We measure your visibility. We never manufacture it. Each guarantee below is enforced in code, not just promised:
- Self-identifying crawler. Our crawler names itself (SEOAIO, seoaio.ai/bot) so you can exclude it from your analytics.
- No manufactured citations. A citation is counted only when the AI engine returns it. We never inject your URL to inflate a score.
- Elicited-probe method, disclosed. Answer Share is measured by asking engines a fixed, disclosed prompt set — never dressed up as organic traffic.
- Measured vs Modeled, always labeled. Every number is stamped measured, modeled, or mixed. We never show a single Measured number over a modeled part.
- Honest confidence bands. Answer Share ships with a 95% confidence interval (Wilson) and its sample size. A small sample shows a wide band, not false precision.
- No engagement manufacturing. We measure your visibility. We never pay to seed prompts or manufacture the metric we report.

Do AI Overviews show for every search?
No, and any report that implies otherwise is over-claiming. Our samples record how often an Overview appeared for your query set, and citation share is computed only over the answers that actually rendered one.
Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
No. Google-Extended controls use of your content for Gemini model training. AI Overviews draw on the normal search index. The audit reads your robots.txt and tells you exactly which Google tokens you allow or block.
Is ranking well enough to be cited?
It helps but it is not the same thing: Overviews cite a handful of sources, and page-one rankings do not map one-to-one onto them. That gap between ranking and being cited is precisely what we measure.
